Episode 10 of Frontier was more or less a remake of that episode in Macross 7 where Basra and Mylene have to play Rick and Misa from the original Macross (with Max and Miria replaying themselves with hilarious consequences). While no where as good as that episode, one of the best early episodes in Macross 7, Episode 10 of Frontier had it’s moments as well.
I thought it was a bit of a cop-out to literally reuse animation from Macross Zero. Darkmirage has an excellent frame by frame analysis of all of this, and I have to say this was pretty lazy on the part of the animators. They should have just reanimated it like in that Macross 7 episode.
Nothing much else to say about this episode except that while this was supposed to make us like Ranka a lot more, it just ended up making me like Sheryl more and more as a character.

I think it’s really cool how Macross F is delving into the ZERO storyline and shedding more light on its characters (both protagonist and antagonist). I remember being both amazed and confused at the whole “Bird Human” aspect and wondering what major importance it had for the rest of the Macross universe. I’m glad to see that it’s being used again.
I’m not trying to pick a fight, but why are most bloggers getting on the animator’s case for re-using the Macross ZERO cels and footage? It’s not like the entire episode was composed of recycled footage, there were a few scenes from the Bird Human movie that were in the episode. If anything, it exited me to see that the ZERO storyline was more than a simple OVA.

Haha it must be the beard, although the director didn’t do anything too slimy this episode. Leon in the Hawaiian shirt really shocked me as well.

GTS: I just think it’s a bit cheap to reuse the animation. They could have done things differently, shown it from a different angle or anything but they choose to reuse it. Even Macross 7 decided to reanime DYRL in its ‘movie of the old times’ episode.
Kabitzin: If Mai Otome and Ranma 1/2 season 4 have taught me anything it’s that anime characters with Hawaiian shirts = bad guys

I never understood the hate for Hawaii shirts. If I had one, I’d wear it. Guess that makes me a bad guy in camouflage. So they really reused Zero cels? I had wondered about this myself. I don’t see anything wrong with that especially considering the plot of the episode which was a pretty neat and fitting idea for Frontier.
